Return-to-Work Essentials

  • Required break in service – You must have at least one full, calendar-year break (no work, no pay) after retirement before starting in a full-time position. Occasional substitute or half-time work during that month still counts as TRS-covered employment—so plan accordingly.
  • Annuity protection – When you meet the break-in-service requirement and return under a full-time contract, your TRS monthly annuity continues unchanged.
  • Detailed information about employment after retirement is available in the TRS publication Employment after Retirement. Employees can contact TRS for additional information by calling 800-223-8778 or 512-542-6400. Information is also available on the TRS Website (www.trs.texas.gov).
